For one of the best days of my life, and probably the one I had anticipated the most, I knew I had to make it special. At that point, I knew proposing is not an easy job. Even though I had been together with Sarah, for over 5 years, asking her to spend the rest of our lives together, was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Since, we were colleagues, I never expected that something as such can even be possible, but yet it did. Once I knew that the perfect moment is here, with butterflies fluttering in my stomach, I started surveying the most romantic places in California. After many hopeless attempts and hours of surveying the internet, I came across Aubergine at L’Auberge Carmel.
The Restaurant was managed by Chef Cogley and his team, and under the impressive administration, had managed to win amazing awards from all over the globe. Amongst their accolades are included, The Forbes’ ranking as a five-star restaurant, the Wine Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence, and the award for The Best West and Outstanding Service. As Chef Cogley was known as the Best Chef in the business, I knew that this was the best place for this special occasion!
On the internet, it seemed dreamy, but I couldn’t risk it! The next day, all excited, I set off for the restaurant, only to find that this can be the perfect place for a dream come true experience. Without thinking twice, I booked a reservation for the 18th of November, which was in 3 days from the reservation. It was Sarah’s birthday that day, and I aimed to possibly make the day even more memorable.
I reached home and called her, to inform that on the 18th we would have to attend a formal host dinner for a client, representing our company. Wishing to make it a surprise, I further added, that she’d have to dress the best she can and would have to prepare for a visual presentation after that. Her reaction was vividly disappointed, which meant that I had succeeded in convincing her, that it certainly was a meeting. The next day I went back to Aubergine, to specify my requirements for our glorious eve. The best thing was that the staff and management were cooperative and acted as my best man! They were there to help me, make this the best day of my life. I decided to decorate the area, in a way to celebrate all the years we had spent together, and what better option is there than pictures and fishline? The next day, I collected all the photographs I had and set up a fishline over the table. Hanged with the use of clips, were pictures, set up in a timeline of all that we’ve done so far. The day after, on the 18th, I had reached an hour earlier, to the restaurant, to see that the staff had added a complimentary flower setup, in which rose petals were laid out in a heart shape, with her and my initials laid in between. The ambiance had been created and all that was left was the lady to arrive.
Across the door, came the beautiful lady, dressed in an amazing black dress. We were guided by the waiter to another area of the floor, to keep the proposal a secret. There I told her that the clients had canceled and that we would be having dinner alone. With a blank face and a racing heart, I pushed across the menu, and we both decided to order. We ordered the tasting menu, which offered a tasting experience of 8 courses, for a price of $185. Along with it, we ordered a bottle of wine, from the restaurant’s amazing wine cellar, which offers undiscovered varieties from all over the globe. The food was presented brilliantly and was very tasty. The five-star restaurant had kept up its mark, and had made sure that the experience was exclusively amazing.
Now, it was the moment of truth! I told her to pick some files from the area that we had decorated, and she went in to see all that we had prepared. Stunned by the amazing decoration she began to observe all the pictures and was just shook by the presentation. On one knee, bent towards her I proposed her, to spend her entire life with me, and to my pleasure, with tears of happiness in her eyes and an amazing smile on her face, she agreed. The day ended on a happy note, and we went on to celebrate the joy, with wine and a romantic dance.
Aubergine at L’Auberge Carmel and its staff will always hold a special place in my heart. Even though, it has been several years since that particular day, we go to the restaurant on the 18th of November, each year to celebrate the best day of our lives, all over again!
