Day 1: We begin our adventure travelling north east of Broken Hill towards the unique outback opal-mining town of ‘White Cliffs’. This tiny community lives underground, whilst above ground there is an eerie lunar landscape, which has been created by years of mining for the elusive opal. Our tour of White Cliffs gives us the opportunity to meet some great outback characters!
- Abundant opportunities to see local bird and wildlife and learn about Australian cultures, bush tucker, geology and history"
Places of interest include the Solar Power Station and a variety of mines and museums (depending on seasonal availability). Why not try
your luck ‘noodling’ for opal, or perhaps buy a special piece from an underground shop. Accommodation tonight is at the famous Underground Motel – an experience you will never forget. (share facilities). (L,D)
Day 2: Leaving our underground oasis, we head west on remote red dirt outback roads towards Packsaddle Roadhouse. Enjoy another
homemade morning tea along the way on the banks of an outback salt lake.
Today’s highlight is a visit to a privately owned area, with exceptional examples of Aboriginal rock engravings. Tri State Safaris has exclusive access to this ancient area. By joining this tour you will become one of the privileged few who will ever experience visiting this unique rock art site.
Panaramitee style rock art
at this site is characterized by motifs pecked into the rock surface with a specially prepared stone tool. Animal tracks predominate, including kangaroo tracks, bird tracks and human footprints, as well as many other motifs. Some extinct forms are also recorded, such as thylacine, giant kangaroo and diprotodon. This site incorporates one of the largest concentrations of engraved rock art in Australia, with appx 18,000 individual engravings recorded. Engravings here are dated beyond 10,000 years old, suggesting a long history of human creativity in this place. As always, our minimal impact practices mean we only take small groups into this very special area. Both our Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal guides have a special affinity with indigenous culture, and are eager to share their knowledge with you.
Enjoy a picnic lunch before commencing our return journey through the Barrier Ranges and back into Broken Hill, through more amazing outback scenery. (B,L) Pre and Post accommodation is not included
