ITINERARY

Day 1: Departing Broken Hill we travel north towards the historic township of Milparinka, virtually a ghost town, that was once the centre of a thriving gold mining settlement. We then head through the remote back country of Sturt National Park to Cameron Corner, where the 3 states meet – there is a permanent population of 2 people living here. Whilst here check out
the ‘Corner Post’ and the famous Dingo Fence for some iconic photo opportunities in the late afternoon light. Dinner and accommodation is at the Corner store (share facilities). (L,D)

Day 2: Today we travel through the spectacular red sand dune country of the Strzelecki Desert, the first of three deserts we will traverse, on our way to Innamincka via the Dig Tree. Made famous by the ill-fated Burke & Wills expedition, this is a must see on your outback adventure.

After settling into our rooms at Innamincka we take the time to check out the majestic Cooper Creek, marvel at the birdlife and enjoy an outback sunset.
Optional: Cruise on the majestic Cooper Creek can be booked at additional cost when available. (LB,L,D)

Day 3: Travelling through the gibber plains of Sturt’s Stony Desert on the Cordillo Downs road we head north towards the iconic outback town of Birdsville, stopping to visit the massive Cordillo Downs Woolshed and Cadelga ruins along the way. The Diamantina River and the famous Birdsville Hotel are some of the highlights of Birdsville, located on the eastern edge of
the Simpson Desert. Accommodation for the next two nights is in modern motel rooms at the Birdsville Hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 4: Today you will have time to relax, read a book or just wander around and soak up the atmosphere of this great outback town. This morning we take a short drive out towards 'Big Red', the highest sand dune in the Simpson Desert, before a scrumptious lunch at the Birdsville bakery (camel or kangaroo pies highly recommended) then the rest of the day is yours to do as you please. There is the option to take a scenic flight whilst in Birdsville over Lake Eyre, The Simpson Desert or Coongie Lakes (B,L,D)

Day 5: From Birdsville we head east through Betoota and then follow the Diamantina Developmental Road into Windorah in the heart of the Channel Country, beside Cooper Creek. Windorah is the Aboriginal word for ‘place of large fish’, and as we take the nature drive from town to the creek we get to view the area in all its diversity and marvel at the birdlife that abounds. Our overnight accommodation is at the Cooper Cabins in Windorah. (B,L,D)

Day 6: Leaving Windorah we head into Quilpie Shire, the home of magnificent boulder opal. Stopping at Quilpie for a café lunch, and a visit to local opal shops, then on through Toompine on our way to Thargominda, on the Bullo River. Check out Australia’s first hydro-electricity system driven by artesian water pressure, before settling into your comfortable cabins for the night. (LB,L,D)

Day 7: From Thargominda travel along the Adventure Way through Noccundra, with a stop on the banks of the Wilson River. We then continue south, crossing the dingo fence at Warri Gate on the QLD/NSW border, to Tibooburra for our overnight stay. One of the highlights of Tibooburra is the quirky Family Hotel, famous for the murals painted by the likes of Clifton Pugh and Russell Drysdale. There will be plenty of time to soak up the atmosphere of this fascinating town and chat with the locals. (LB,L,D)

Day 8: This morning we continue to explore the highlights of Tibooburra, including Golden Gully, the Museum, NPWS  interpretive centre, and much more before heading back towards Broken Hill, with an enjoyable lunch stop at Packsaddle Roadhouse on the way. (LB,L)
