First stop in Philly will be Independence National Historical Park which preserves several sites associated with the American Revolution and the founding of the nation. A guided tour through this most historic area will bring us to Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed, and the iconic Liberty Bell, which rang during its reading. Take a moment for a great photo op: the Liberty Bell from inside with Independence Hall in the background outside.
Next our bus will take us to Magic Gardens, a unique and visionary 3,000 square foot outdoor mosaic art installation with indoor galleries, covering half a city block. Isaiah Zagar created this environment from found objects--bicycle wheels, broken china, colorful glass bottles, ceramic pieces, hand-made tiles and thousands of glittering mirrors and other reflective items. Tunnel through the labyrinth of winding hallways and multi layer dungeons and feel the magic. We are quite certain you have never seen anything like this!
Board the bus for a drive downtown to the intersection of 9th Street and Passyunk Avenue, home to two civic icons – Pat’s King of Steaks and Geno’s Steaks – the most famous Philly cheesesteak joints in the world. Pat’s is older, built in 1930 with historic photos to prove it, no frills, and claims the inventor of the popular sandwich. Geno’s, built in 1966, is a formidable, perpetually neon-lit competitor across the street. Despite their differences, both share the following features: open 24/7, outdoor seating, cash only and at-the-ready, know your order or get out of line, and outside seating only pertain to both. Conduct a blind taste test with your friends to determine your favorite, but keep the results quiet–the servers are notoriously grouchy!
A short drive will bring us to Independence Seaport Museum, a waterfront park along the Delaware River. The site gained its spot in American history in 1682 when it served as the landing place for William Penn, founder of the Pennsylvania Colony. For those hoping to get more of a taste of Philadelphia's naval history, you can check out numerous historic ships moored here, among which are a World War II-era submarine and a Spanish-American War-era cruiser.
At the end of the day, we will return home with a greater appreciation of Philadelphia–a magical, historic and iconic city.
